Indigenous to Polynesia and the South Pacific, kava kava has been used with major rituals for social ceremonies as well as communication with their gods. In the Hawaiian Islands, its use was reserved for the chiefs, who used it to detach emotionally, in order to make important decisions for the tribe. Mildly narcotic, kava kava is known to help relieve tension, fatigue, muscle pain and insomnia. It has an anesthetic effect on the urinary tract, and very beneficial on arthritic conditions. The flavor is bitter, with a mouth numbing effect. WARNING: Not to be use by pregnant or nursing women, nor those with liver conditions. If unusual symptoms occur, discontinue use.
