Much like its citizens, the history of tea in Korea has had it’s challenges. With a strong connection to Buddhism, tea was often used in ceremony and ritual. The formal tea drinking culture began somewhere between the 2nd and 6th century mainly through the reverence it was given by Buddhist monks. Many tea ceremonies were created around what they referred to as “mind origin tea,” and some scholars credit Korea as the originators of the modern tea ceremony. When Korea went through a power and religious shift in the 14th century, tea consumption was prohibited for it’s connection with Buddhism and wasn’t able to fully emerge again until the end of Japanese occupation in 1945. Since that time, Korea has continued to produce primarily green teas, with some black and oolong as well.
